A Book of Portraits is a collaborative, artist-led community interest company that develops and delivers participatory music and theatre events, that take inspiration from traditional folk customs, celebrations and heritage stories.
We have been making work since 2023 and very recently became a registered CIC with ambitions to develop more projects with local communities in the coming years. We are based in the West Midlands and have been building connections with communities in our area for three years now, providing events made with and for those particular communities, as well as school workshops and performances.
The company is run by director/designer Alexander Kaniewski and composer/musician Peter Bell and employs a network of local freelance artists to collaboratively deliver projects. Sometimes this can be as many of 30 individuals depending on the event.
Our Manifesto:
To provide bespoke and accessible, community-focused music and theatre events that celebrate, illustrate and reimagine traditional folk performance cultures and celebrations. Our work engages with the needs of a specific community and involves them in the development of shared events that promote togetherness.
We provide opportunities for people to make connections with others and celebrate themselves through a shared sense of performed tradition, be that an old or brand new tradition.
