Will We Impress Good Queen Bess
Will We Impress Good Queen Bess
In July 2024 we recreated Robert Dudley’s lavish spectacle at Kenilworth Castle in 1575. Supported by English Heritage, Will We Impress Good Queen Bess brought together 30 local artists in the performance of traditional Elizabethan music, dance and spectacle, engaging an audience of 400+ people over a four-hour event. This project provided educational workshops and interactive performance experiences for primary school children as well as participatory activities for the local public.
Premise:
In 1575 Robert Dudley laid on a lavish music and theatre event at his home Kenilworth Castle. Its intention was to win the heart of the visiting Queen, Elizabeth I, who Dudley had coveted for many years. This impressive spectacle included an 18-foot mermaid, performers dressed as ancient gods and a giant wooden dolphin with musicians inside. Come and see our troupe of travelling bards, minstrels and vagabonds as we pull out all the stops to try and impress Good Queen Bess.
Will We Impress Good Queen Bess, 450th year Celebrations
The event in 2024 was a great achievement for the group and we have gone on to run more school workshops at the castle in 2025. Our hard work was recognized when we were asked back to the Castle by the Mayor of Kenilworth to support the 450th year celebrations of Queen Elizabeth visiting to Kenilworth Castle this year. We provided our music and characters for a community picnic with the people of Kenilworth entertaining and engaging nearly 800 people.
