Free Creative Community Event!
Sunday 22nd
of November
Radford Semele Community Hall
Between 10am and 3pm
Live Music
Craft activities
Free refreshments
We invite local residents to the Community Hall to enjoy some free refreshments and live music as we discuss ideas for an original character that represents Radford Semele. We will be providing a drawing activity to help get the creative ideas flowing. This event will also provide an opportunity for people of all ages to share their stories of Radford Semele and get to know us as a group. We are hoping the event will unearth interesting narratives rooted in the local landscape that we can explore within a future performance.
Past Work:
Take a look the project we developed with the community of Hatton village in 2023.
Future Events:
The second phase of this project will feature a bespoke folk promenade performance that will take place in various locations around Radford Semele.
Performance premise: The characters from A Book of Portraits have heard of an interesting new character living in the local area. You will journey through the village, helping A Book of Portraits to find their new potential companion. The event will culminate in a fictitious folk ceremony featuring live music and performance to welcome the new character into the group.
Who we are:
A Book of Portraits is a collaborative, artist-led community interest company that develops and delivers participatory music and theatre events, that take inspiration from traditional folk customs, celebrations and heritage stories.
Meet some of our existing characters: The Lavender Man will be summoned, the dance of the Flower Maiden learned, The musical Fox is roaming, and the Drummer is guiding us forward. Meet our collection of quirky characters inspired by English folk.

Research Taking Place
Alexander Kaniewski, one of the directors of A Book of Portraits C.I.C., is currently undertaking taking a PhD, examining the role of the artist in the facilitation of British folk performance cultures. During the event Alexander will be gathering people’s thoughts on the event as well as their opinions on what a future pageant might look like.
What is the purpose of this study?
This study aims to look at the artist’s role in supporting and developing folk performance events.
This study will develop performance events for local communities. The artistic content and material of these events will be created in conversation with the local people for whom the events are intended.
We hope these events will give communities the opportunity to come together and celebrate their local identity and heritage in a way that is representative of their community today.
The findings and experiences of the artists involved in the study will be presented as a guide to help other artists working in this field.
This research is being conducted by Alexander Kaniewski, a PhD student in the Faculty of Technology, Arts and Culture at De Montfort University, Leicester.
